In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), West Africa Deaf Sports Union (WADSU), will be hosting the 13th edition of the West Africa Deaf Football Championship and the third West Africa Deaf Athletic Championship.
The Championship is scheduled from the 18th to the 31st of August, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The event will involve 12 African countries: Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Togo, Senegal, Nigeria, and Guinea-Conakry.
The Championship will feature mixed relays, 100, 200, 400, 800 meters, 4 by 100, 4 by 400, among other events.The President of WADSU, Amuda Yusuf Ibrahim, disclosed during a press briefing held in Lagos yesterday.
Ibrahim noted that the event would create a platform to select many qualified athletes, players, and country teams to compete at the global stage competitions such as Deaflympics, All Africa Deaf Games, among others.“This would foster integration and inclusive participation of the Deaf athletes and players in organized sports events in each country in the West Africa region, such as the National Sports Festival.
