St. John Vianney Science College in Ukwulu, Anambra State, Nigeria, defeated both British and local competitors to win the title of grand champion in the first-ever UK-Nigeria Debate Competition. Top-ranked schools from Nigeria and the UK participated in the virtual competition, which took place on June 19, 2025.
Four Nigerian schools participated: St. John Vianney Science College in Ukwulu; Britarch Schools in Abuja; Sure Start School in Abuja; and St. Augustine’s College in Jos. Schools like Shireland High School, Maghull High School, and Central Foundation Girls’ School represented the United Kingdom.
St. John Vianney Science College advanced to the finals following exhausting preliminary rounds. The team advanced to an all-Nigerian final versus St. Augustine’s College, Jos, after easily defeating British competitors Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School. St. John Vianney Science College won the coveted title of Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Champions with a resounding victory in the finals of an extremely tough contest.
