The Academic Staff Union of Universities -ASUU has condemned widespread institutional weaknesses, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and pervasive corruption in Nigeria, which compromise governance at all levels.
ASUU National President, Emmanuel Osodeke expressed concern over the lack of inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability in governance during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Conference at the University of Benin, Main Campus, Ugbowo.
Osodeke highlighted the country’s worsening conditions, which he claims is due to the government’s adoption of neoliberal economic policies, leading to issues like apathy, cynicism, and mass migration, known as “Japa”, among the youth.
He said that despite the nation’ vast resources, it struggles with high unemployment, inflation, poverty, and currency depreciation.
While efforts at economic diversification, such as in technology and agriculture, show promise, Osodeke emphasised the need for bold commitment and substantial infrastructure development.
He questioned the genuineness of the government’s reforms, stating that the ongoing brain drains, where professionals and young graduates are seeking better opportunities abroad, is a clear indication of the failure of national policies and a testament to poorly conceived reforms.
